Armchair CEO: Apple

Apple - Mac OS X or Panther, on the old iBook is unveiling some of its secrets.

For instance, if you Cmd-Tab to switch apps, but while holding Tab down you release the Cmd key and then Cmd-Q to quit the selected app? It's fast and easy.

I've really been putting Panther through the paces. But my hardware is finally up to task, so the kitty has been playing hard...

You can Expose "show desktop" for as long as you like. You can drag & drop items in the sidebars in Finder.

Oh, and I *do* like the new Finder now. The GUI eject on mounted volumes is ever so handy.

I'll still say the bigger your monitor the better. I'm having scads of fun with Konfabulator Widgets, but I wish I could have them all up at once. No matter. Eventually I will get a KVM switch to go between the G3, VAIO, and this book (which will be dual display!).

Next I'll need a nice Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse. Ha!

Golly, I even tried XCode. Really sweet! It made a lot of sense, although I still need to retrieve my applescript. I like the imnplementation, although it confused me at first... (I was looking for AppleScript Studio before realizing it's "in there").

And as I type my desktop slowly shifts into the next... A nice Quartz effect. I have to say the QE rendering is superb on this machine. Still, computers have a LONG way to go to be acceptable in my book, at least I'm getting decent framerates!

Hrm, what else? Safari screams, and setup was the simplest computer I've ever had to configure. I merely accepted the ONE screen of network defaults (OK, two including choosing the airport card) and away we went.

Loving it so far, just gotta finish with the dang installs.

woohoo!

Ah, Apple.

Tomorrow I get my iBook G4. I'm hoping terribly that it won't let me down. You know those random events that can occur in the manufacturing process?

A broken button, dead pixel, or loud fan...

But I really just want to play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 on the thing-- sweet!

My predictions for the new year:
- Apple will continue dominance in the i-music arena
- there will be a bad virus to hit the mac community
- G5's will hit 2.5 GHz
- all new servers

My wish:
Apple buys Discreet and ports 3D Studio Max to the mac.
AMEN!

BSD: Should Apple port OS X to Intel?

I think this will eventually happen. It would shut up everyone who complains about Apple's "no tablet PC" rule.

Look, an iBook could turn into a tablet for about another $300-- no problem. It's MUCH harder to fit a G5 into a PowerBook. So quit yer gripin!

Really though, the reason a move would happen is just to open the OS to all the other kinds of hardware out there. But, you'll pay a premium. Yes, you can have your Norweigan Forest Cat, but it'll cost you a premium anywhere from 10 to 30%...

That's Apple's way of not undercutting it's own boxes. The neat thing is, Apple then truly becomes the SONY of the PC world.

And really, I think Apple could become a sort of "new" Sony-- cool American consumer gadgets. Why not a Tommy Hillfigger edition iPod? Or a "solid" gold eminem edition iMac with Soundtrack... Or whatever. You get the picture.

So do I...

As a result, I'd really love to become Apple's CEO some day. I'm thirty, I think I could get there in say-- 15 years? I respect the hell out of Jobs. I'd love to just interview him for an hour on business. Here's a guy who's a true modern day genius. What's cool about Apple, at the core, is that 2 modern geniuses were finally in the right place at the right time... How often does that happen?
